Built 321 meters above sea level the Hreljin castle and the ruins of this medievel city represent what was once a very established and notorious city centre. Projecting from the steep slopes of Vinodol citizens of this area would use this as the main passage between the sea and this feudal town. The castle dates back to the 13th century when it was still under rule by the Frankopan family. Eventually it was run by the Austrian State Chmaber and it was during this period that people began to emmigrate from Hrlejin to Rijeka. Three priests were the last individuals to leave this settlement in 1790 to the new town of Hreljin. Today St.George's bell tower and the Church of the Holy Virgin Mary have been conserved and provide tourists and locals alike a glimpse of what this fascinating ancient town once resembled.
Various hiking and biking paths encirlce this area. The hill is quite steep therefore an easier option is to get to the main entrance of the ancient town of Hreljin by car and then stroll downwards to the plateu where the castle is situated.
